HISTORY OF AYIA NAPA

The word "Ayia" means "holy" in Greek which accounts for the fact that one of the most visited historic sites in the city is an ancient monastery.

The Agia Napa Monastery was built in the 16th century and consists of a famous fountain, beautiful courtyard and stunning ruins. And is a popular wedding venue,

this historic site is a must see when visiting Ayia Napa. A number of museums also dots this town featuring everything from marine life to local archaeological finds.

Beaches/Waterfront Activities

When not sunning it up the beaches and visiting historic sites such as the monastery and various museums, there are a number of things to do in Ayia Napa that will make your trip worthwhile. Being right on the water, there are a number of day cruises and boat tours you and your family can embark on and a visit to the stunning sea caves is always a treat. Ten minutes outside Ayia Napa is the famed Cape Greco. Ayia Napa, located southeast of the islands coast, is reputable for its tourist resort all over Europe. It is one of Cyprus's most popular beach resorts. Normally the little village has less than 1000 inhabitants, but during summer season it hosts more than 10.000 tourists per day. The beaches are awesome with thin and fine sand, hidden among a chain of rocky boulders that form many small and cosy bays.

Just in the centre of Ayia Napa you 'll find a spectacular monastery at the entrance of an old fig tree. In the court an octagonal fountain which has on its base the founder of the monastery a woman's portrait as well as her mother and father whom have forbidden her to marry.

Exploring Cyrprus

The Republic of Cyprus is the third largest island in the Mediterranean situated to the North of Egypt, south of Turkey and to the east of Greece, it joined the European Union in May of 2004. In a similar vein there is Ancient Kourin a Greco-Roman amphitheatre from the second century BCE and the Paphos Mosaics said to be the best example of Roman mosaics found so far. Ancient Salamis with its Temple of Zeus Saliminios and the Basilica of St. Epiphanius is another worthy venue.
A visit to Akamas the National Park is a must if you want admire the scenery perhaps visit some of the picturesque mountain villages scattered in within its boundaries as is Cape Greco. Cape Greco, also known as Cavo Greco is a headland in the southeastern part of the island of Cyprus. It is at the southern end of Famagusta Bay.It lies between the towns of Ayia Napa and Protaras, both of which are popular tourist resorts. It is frequently visited by many tourists for its natural beauty. It is a protected nature park. From the high points on the cliff that rests at the cape one can view amazing sights out to sea.According to local legend it is also the home of the 'Ayia Napa sea monster'. The Troodos Mountains are perfect for hiking and cycling among the cedar and pine vegetation. Take time to stop at some local cafes and sample the local dishes on offer. Halloumi cheese has been eaten since medieval times. Seafood and fish dishes predominate along with other traditional dishes including smoked pork loin and charcoal grilled lamb. Deserts are a speciality, particularly Turkish delight or Lokum produced in the village of Geroskipou which has `protected geographical indication (PGI) for this sweet.
